I just read it quickly but it says that in order for a vehicle to be eligible for the rebate, it would have to be able to pass a smog test. WTF?

mandate a minimum number of old cars to scrap in exchange for buying new fuel-efficient vehicles, provided a bill currently in the state’s congress becomes law.

Wait, is this saying there will have to be a minimum numbers of cars turned in annually, or that you will need to turn in multiple cars to get a rebate?

Also, I doubt much of anything worth a damn would get turned in. Especially if they are trying to go through dealers, if its worth more than the rebate I bet they would just try to buy it outright.

The credit would be worth 12000 towards an electric car or 4500 for ICE, and the vehicle would have to be sent to a dismantler. A lot of cars good cars in that price cap.

Never forget that it’s clearly better for the environment to build a new car instead of keeping an existing one running.

and somehow this is supposed to help lower income families by removing the vehicles they buy from the market

No it just helps the automobile manufacturers, especially Tesla. State politicians haven’t cared about poor people in decades.

I know, the amount of crap that flows out of their mouths is just ridiculous, and so many people buy into it.

The thing is, if it passes a Smog test, it can’t be that dirty. Most cars that are less than 30 years old blow damn near zeroes if the 02 sensors and Cat are working. Most of the most egregious offenders have already been removed from the road, but older cars are a convenient scapegoat. Don’t worry about commercial vehicles, big rigs, oceangoing ships in our major ports, aircraft, or methane from cattle production, get those dad-gum old cars.

Fuel economy is one thing, emissions quite another. If they want to offer incentives to get people into more efficient cars, fine. Or they could offer to take cars that will no longer pass Smog, or for which repairs to do so exceed a certain value, but that would too much sense. This state is so backwards on such matters that it’s pointless to try to talk sense into any lawmakers.

Late 70s-late 80s cars in good shape were through the roof as it was. Add 90s cars to it....
